Thai BTS Skytrain
As available only in Bangkok, the Skytrain /BTS Skytrain – Bangkok Mass Transit System or “sa-ky” in Thai/ was opened in December 5-th 1999 for the King’s 72nd birthday. There are two lines - Sukhumvit Line with 17 stations and 10.5 miles /17 kilometres/ in length, and the Silom Line, with 7 stations and 4 mile /6.5 kilometres/ in length. The Skytrain is about 36 feet /12 metres/ above Bangkok. The stations are clear and kept in good condition.
There are about 40 trains traveling at speed about 48 mph /80 kmh/ all of them airconditioned. Trains run in 5 minutes in rush-hours and about 10 in the other time. In the beginning the Skytrain was mainly used by tourists because of the higher fares but now it is gaining more and more popularity among local people as it is one of the fastest means of transport. There are plans for future extension of the Skytrain network. For convenience there are free of charge Shuttle busses /with the logo of BST Skytrain/ which make easier connections with other means of transport. You have only to take your free tickets and wave down the driver. Or you can combine the Skytrain with the Subway for even faster transport
Fares vary from 30-40 Baht /0.75$-1$/ for a single ride to 540 Baht /15$/ for 30-trips ride. Tickets and cards are sold and charged from vending machines or even contactless ticketing with smart cards.
