Tips for Visitors

When to visit Thailand
Almost all year the weather in Thailand is hot and good for tourism. As most appropriate for your visit is thought to be between November and February. The weather is cooler and there is not so much rain.

Clothes – what to wear in Thailand
As Thailand is located in tropical climate bring cotton, light and loose dresses with comfortable shoes or sandals. During the Cool Season visitors are advised to bring a sweater or a jacket. Umbrellas are necessary during the Rainy Season

Social norms and etiquettes in Thailand:
  • Usually Thais don't shake hands when they greet one another, but instead press the palms together in a prayer-like gesture called a “wai”. Generally a younger person wais an elder, who returns it.

  • Never touch people on the head, as Thais regard the head as the highest part of the body both literally and figuratively.

  • Never point at something or touch someone with your foot as it is regarded as the lowest part of the body

  • When entering a Thai temple where Buddha image is kept or private home always remove your shoes.

  • When you are in public do not walk topless as it is regarded as impolite.

  • Avoid affection like hugging and kissing in public.

  • Always smile when greeting, thanking and apologizing.

  • Avoid drawing attention to yourself as it is considered as rude.

  • Always refer to Thai people with his/her first name.

  • Dropping litter in the street is illegal – fine 2.000 Baht

  • Smoking in the street is illegal – fine 2.000 Baht.

Commercial offices: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m., 1 - 5 p.m. (Monday - Friday).
Government offices: 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m., 1 - 4:30 p.m. (Monday - Friday).
Banks: 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Monday - Friday).
Shops: 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. (seven days a week).
Department stores: 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Tipping in Thailand
It is customary to tip porters, taxi drivers and good personal service. In restaurants the tip is 10 – 15 %.
